The group stage of the 2026 Airtel Masaza Cup came to a dramatic conclusion on Sunday, delivering dreams for some counties while crushing the hopes of others. After ten rounds of intense football across Buganda's three groups—Masengere, Bulange, and Muganzirwazza—the quarter-final lineup is now complete. Only the top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed sides, have advanced to the knockout stage.

According to the final standings, the eight teams that secured their places are:

Kyaggwe – The first team to qualify, topping the Masengere Group with an impressive 23 points. They remained unbeaten at home in Mukono throughout the campaign.

Buddu – The three-time champions staged a remarkable comeback to finish top of the Bulange Group with 19 points, demonstrating their championship pedigree.

Gomba – Record five-time champions recovered from early setbacks to secure second place in Masengere with 19 points.

Butambala – Topped the Muganzirwazza Group irrespective of their 3-2 loss aganist Mawogola on the final matchday, sealing their qualification in style.

Busujju, Kyadondo, Bugerere, and Mawogola – These four teams progressed as second-placed finishers and the best third-placed sides after tense victories on the final day.

Kyaggwe's 1-0 triumph over Busiro on matchday 8 had already secured their knockout berth, while Butambala's emphatic win on matchday 9 officially confirmed their place among the elite eight.

However, the biggest story of the group stage is the shocking elimination of ten teams, including both of last season's finalists.

Defending champions Buweekula – who won the 2025 title after defeating Ssingo 1-0 in the final – are OUT after finishing fourth in the Bulange Group with only 12 points. Their 3-1 defeat at Busujju on the final matchday sealec their fate.

Runners-up Ssingo, three-time champions of the competition, also crashed out following a disastrous campaign. Their 1-0 defeat to Bugerere on matchday 6 proved to be the turning point that derailed their qualification hopes.

Joining them on the exit list are Buluuli, Buvuma, Busiro, Ssese, Kooki, Kabula, Mawokota, and Bulemeezi. While Ssingo and Kabula had been mathematically eliminated a week earlier, Ssingo still harboured faint hopes of qualification had Bugerere lost to Kooki – hopes that ultimately went unfulfilled.

The tournament's structure is unforgiving – eighteen teams begin the journey, but only eight remain standing. This ruthless format sets the stage for what promises to be a thrilling knockout phase, with potential heavyweight clashes on the horizon, including a possible meeting between Gomba and Buddu.
