Bushenyi – Saturday, 6th June 2026
The highly anticipated Ankole Cup 2026 opened today in Bushenyi with what organisers are calling a "massive" turnout, as football fans from across the region flooded the stadium to witness the opening match.
In a statement released by the Organising Committee, the event was described as an overwhelming success, both in terms of attendance and revenue. The opening ceremony and subsequent matches drew huge crowds, including Members of Parliament, key stakeholders, and passionate fans who turned the venue into a sea of celebration.
"This was massive," the committee said. "We would like to thank all our fans, MPs, and other key stakeholders for turning up in big numbers."
Beyond the electric atmosphere, the event proved a financial triumph. The organisers confirmed that gate collections alone amounted to Uganda Shillings 28,634,100 (Twenty eight million, six hundred thirty four thousand, one hundred shillings).
According to the committee, the funds will be used to cover the costs of hosting the day’s events in Bushenyi, as well as to support the Organising Committee's future engagements throughout the tournament.
Special praise was reserved for the local authorities. "We would also like to thank Bushenyi District for being organized, cooperative, and transparent," the statement added.
With a record-breaking start and strong financial backing from the very first day, the Ankole Cup 2026 is already being hailed as a benchmark for grassroots football organisation in the region.
"God bless you all," the committee concluded.
Matchday 1 continues with more matches expected to draw even larger crowds.
